Well what a fantastic month we had this December! Our penny drive came to an official close in November with a grand total of $1200. Great job everyone and thank you for helping out! Of course, our winning class celebrated with ice cream, hula skirts, sprinkles and music! Thank you to all who helped out with their serving and waiter-ing skills. It was a ton of fun!
Our meetings consisted of figuring out the planning for the party and we started to play some fun ice breaker games. Our last meeting of December was on the 14 due to the winter break. So we ended the year with a BANG and celebrated with lots of yummy food, chit chatting and watching a movie.
A big thanks to all our active members for making this year truly great! We hope to see you all in the next year, we've got big dreams and a lot to do so rest up and enjoy your holidays! A happy new year from the exec team and see you on Jan 4 :)

We had a very discussion filled meeting this week which was great! This week we confirmed some more details about the surprise Ice Cream

Mrs Hyrsko brought up a great opportunity for some members to join the Executives for a Me-We event. We had 3 spots and our lucky members coming are Bo Chen, Simran, and Din. Make sure you guys check your schedules to see if you are free on December 13th and be aware of the fact that there will be 2 other days that you will have to attend this conference. Congrats!

Here is what went down this meeting! WE HAVE CONCLUDED OUR PENNY DRIVE, a big thank you to all those collectors and counters and people who donated! The winning class is Mrs Black's Grade 10 Class. We are planning a big surprise party for them so we won't disclose any information here, but please check your email for an email from Michelle regarding the Party
We also started and finished taping scenes for our Pepsi Refresh Video! We are applying for a $5000 grant to help pay for the Youth in Action Run called “Run around the Globe” coming up shortly. We hope this run will not only inspire youth to take initiative but to inspire the community in coming out and joining a great cause. We are hoping to use the money to support local school groups run by our charity Free the Children. The video will be revealed next meeting! Cross your fingers and let's hope that on Dec 1 Pepsi accepts our application :) Visit this page for more information.
The Holiday Sale is coming up Wednesday Deccember 1 and we have a stand for wrapping gifts all day long.

Here is what went down during this weeks meeting. We decided on the Youth in Action Logo through blind vote :) The logo will be posted on the website shortly! Also tshirt information for the group is going to be distributed very soon!
For Dare to Care we split into our sub committee groups:
- Student HR Team (Jenny and Mishal)
- Teacher HR Team (Shipra and Farwa)
- Technical Department (Sana)
- Decorating Committee (Krisin)
- Dare Department (Michelle)
We counted money as well for the continuing penny drive and counted over $236
We have a bake sale tomorrow

This week some of the Youth in Action members took a trip to the Holocaust for Hope conference at Milton District. It was a moving, emotional and very informative trip. The group was split up amongst other schools and visited different sections of the school. Everyone heard from a miraculous woman who came from Seirra Leone and told us about her difficult life there and how she came to be the woman she is today. It was very inspiring and moving and was very exciting to hear from her. Other parts of the conference consisted of talking about The Holocaust, Milton District had even brought in 2 survivors who talked to us about their great trials.
Another woman spoke about the problems in Darfur. She talked about interviewing people in Darfur for the UN and told us a story that many of us will never forget and brought many of us into tears. One woman waited to be interviewed by her who had not originally signed up and was told that she could not be interviewed that day. She waited until the end of the day, after all the people left, in hopes that she too will get the chance to speak. Of course she did, but the interviewer told her that her life may be in danger now as she was waiting out in the open but her only words were “I don't care. I would rather die if it means that my people of the future will be safe”
It was truly a magnificent and motivating experience and it was wonderful to hear from these speakers.

Meeting Recap -November 2 2010
Today was another super productive meeting! We firstly took our group photo which will be published in the yearbook! The thermometer was finished (thanks to the arts committee) and will be hung up soon in the foyer. The money from the penny drive was counted once again and now we have a great, great total of $305. Also the penny drive has been extended until NOVEMBER 23 since we had a bit of a late start.
In order to keep the success going, we have decided to have class reps in each period 1 class. Remember that your job is to remind your class about raising money (get them in the spirit!) and remind your teacher to bring the money to their head office every day for collection (if not, it is your responsibility to do so).

Also, starting this week YIA will have a new system for recruiting volunteers – we will be going down the attendance list and pick volunteers accordingly. We have been noticing that the exact same people always volunteer and as much as we appreciate their dedication, it is not fair to them. If you joined YIA, we hope that you are dedicating your time and efforts with the right reasons in mind. We hope you know that we are working so assiduously for this charity (to help children who are far less fortunate than we are), and not for volunteer hours or recognition. Please show us some commitment.
A Tentative date is hopefully going to be on December 14th for Dare to Care, but this will all be confirmed very soon after the Execs meeting with Mr. Heffernan.

The group split off as the treasury committee went to count money and we learned today that we already have $155 from the Penny Drive! The rest of the committees split up. We all worked on creating a fundraiser in place of Senior Auction. Coincidently the 2 sides of the group both came up with the exact same idea, to run a buyout called Dare to Care!
· Essentially an event where students can chip in money to sponsor crazy dares (school-appropriate)
For example:
· Karaoke on the spot
· Wearing ridiculous costumes
· Shaving head
· Dying hair
· Shaving/Waxing legs – males
· Wearing no make-up/Sweats - female
*This is completely voluntary and open to all RBHS students – so you will not have to do a dare that you do not want to do! These dares are for CHARITY.
This idea will be confirmed as soon as possible once Michelle and Shipra speak with Mr Herfernan!
Other great notes from todays meeting:
· Voortman cookies will be donating 400 cookies for our FTC run in April!
· Mr. Heffernan has generously paid $1000 in order to get us our very own Free The Children’s fundraising co-ordinators! We will be 1 out of 9 other schools in Halton to fundraise for FTC.
· Shipra and I (Michelle) met with Mr. Heffernan yesterday:
· Confirmed meeting for next Thursday: Mr. Heffernan, Miss Fehir, Mrs. Hrysko, Shipra, Michelle, FTC Coordinators & POSSIBLY Mayor Rick Goldring
· Ask Mayor Goldring for a $4000 sponsorship – to provide funding for our run
· Discuss fundraising tactics and tentative schedule with FTC Coordinators
· Convince FTC that RBHS is the school that would like to host Craig Kielburger’s visit! We must show them our initiative!
Some things that we plan to accomplish next week:
· Will be taking our GROUP PHOTO at the beginning of the meeting!
· Arts & Media Committee will work on the Penny Drive Thermometer – start keeping track of how much money we have raised so that the whole school can see! Also make a visual chart system that can be put in front of the school that can keep track of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Classes!

Secretarial Subcommittee
The Youth in Action Penny Drive date launch has been chosen to be on October 19 and it will run until November 15. Penny jars are planned to be placed in the Café, Bistro, library, office and staffroom all year long. Maggie Ann will be writing an email to send to teachers to notify them about the penny drive and how it will operate. Also, the group decided to give an incentive for all the students, which was the chance to win an ICE CREAM PARTY for the Period 1 class that earns the most!
· Ice-cream can be purchased from wholesale store such as Costco (as well as toppings for ice-cream)·
· Baskin Robins/DQ may be interested in donating some ice cream for the cause à very small donation required, therefore they may be more inclined to sponsor Free the Children
· Even Costco could be asked to sponsor us with ice-cream
· Speak to Mr. Zehrà Cooking classes have prepared meals for other student & lead events in the past, they may be able to cook a meal for the winning class in addition to the ice cream

Today we made 6 posters to advertise the Penny Drive and will be put up around the school by the next meeting. The thermometer was started (which will count the progress of the Penny Drive) and will be finished next meeting. Sana created the announcements which will be read everyday for the first two weeks and them more sepratly. If you are interested insaying the annoucnments, please let her know. Flyers will be made and go up on Monday as well.
Fundraising Subcommittee
· -Ms Fehir will get the group Ziploc Bags which will be distributed to all the classes for penny drive money collection
· Figure out if we are allowed to put jars in the Cafe/Bistro/Office/Corner Store/Library

How often will the money be counted?
- money should be counted every week at Tuesday’s YIA meeting so that it doesn’t pile up
What materials are needed to count the money?- we have paper rolls for change purchased and ready-to-go thanks to Raman Sohal!
- need to find disposable medical gloves for hygiene purposes when counting money – Din Avdic volunteered to possibly talk to a janitor about getting those
Where does the money go once it is counted?
- Miss Fehir has period 2 and 5 off, and she has a locked cabinet in which she can store the money, so the money can go to her once it is collected
How to keep track of how much money each class has raised individually?
- spreadsheet to keep track of the classroom number and how much said class has raised
- Mayank Sindiwani has volunteered to make a spreadsheet to keep track of this! (Please send this spreadsheet upon its completion as Farwa will be managing it)
Note to Committee: EVERYTHING you accomplish in this committee MUST be reported to Farwa. It is VITAL that she knows everything that is going on in terms of YIA’s funds.
