Youth in Action first started 5 years back, through the "Theory of Knowledge" class because the students wanted to get involved in activities that were "altruistic" and has ever since been as known Youth in Action. The team has run numerous events over the years to aid many charities. To give you a little dose of action from the past, here are a few events that have really shown people what we are all about!
Wild Run for Aids: 2008
In the 2007-2008 school year, the Youth In Action team decided to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The group planned a run at the end of the school year in which not only did the school take part, but the entire Burlington Community. It was a huge success and that year, in partnership with the other groups throughout the school $18 000 was raised. Stephen Lewis himself came to the school and gave an inspiring speech, it was definitely an event to remember.
Robert Bateman's Fashion Shows (2009 & 2010)
Youth in Action also hosted the "Sleepwalk" Fashion show, as well as the "Transitions: Walking with a purpose" Fashion show, two years in a row. These events raised money for the organization Sleeping Children Around the World and SafetyNet. The Youth in Action group, along with many volunteers from Bateman put on a show, hosting clothing from many stores such as Laura, Tiptop, Gap, Campus Crew, etc. The show even consisted of dancing from the dance groups at Robert Bateman. It raised $1300 one year and $1400 the next. Bateman put on two spectacular shows and even brought out the community to come and watch!
Retirement Home Visit
In December 2009, we went and visited a retirement home and took Christmas Spirit with us! The Youth In Action group went over to the retirement home to stretch their vocal chords and sing some carols. This wasn't an event that raised any money, but an event that gave back to the community and just overall a fun experience. Our talented group even discovered some future singers and musicians!
