If you missed the first Youth in Action meeting, no worries, here is a brief recap of what went down!
September 14 (first meeting):
The meeting was held in room 220 at 2:50pm (same place each week unless otherwise stated) and the turnout was fantastic! Shipra started out by introducing Youth in Action and telling the group, what we do and about our initiatives:
-We Help out those who are in need, locally and globally
-Hold fundraisers and events (in school and out of school)
-Give the team opportunities to volunteer (in and out of school)

It was announced that for the year 2010-2011 the charity focus will be “Free the Children”. This charity supports the idea of Youth helping Youth; after all, we are Youth in Action. The Goal this year is to raise $20,000 in hope that Craig Keilburger will be able to visit out school! The major project this year will be to “run” a run which we hope can be done in April in support of our charity, Free the Children.
Here is a little bit about the charity, Free the Children:
- Built more than 500 schools, providing education to more than 50,000 children every day
- Distributed more 207,500 school and health kits sent to children in need
- Shipped US$15 million dollars in essential medical supplies to 40 countries
- Developed an efficient administrative model that allows 91 cents of every donated dollar to go to programs that directly benefit children
- Implemented alternative income projects helping more than 23,500 women
- Helped 138,500 people by providing access to clean water and improved sanitation
- Awarded the 2006 World Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child, also known as the Children's Nobel Prize
- Received the 2006 Human Rights Award from the United Nations/World Association of Non-Government Organizations (WANGO)
- Received the 2007 Skill award for social entrepreneurship
- Nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize
- Received the World Economic Forum medal
- Received the State of the World Forum Award
- Received the Roosevelt Freedom Medal
We also sponsor 2 children, Ruby and Neserand from World Vision and run bake sales in order to support them, so remember, if you have any baking skills, please make sure you volunteer in the near future! It was also talked about to go Apple Picking!

· Spring/March Event – to be decided (please give us some ideas!)
· Monthly Local Volunteer Excursions
· Guinness Book of World Records (do you have any ideas as to what kind of record Bateman can break? - brainstorm!)
At regular meetings, we will discuss current events around the globe. If you find the chance, watch/read the news and share it at the next meeting. The importance of Youth In Action commitment and attendance was explained because we have a lot to do this year!
